Help Compilers
To generate compiled help file output, you must have a help compiler. The requirements for the help compiler vary depending on the specific compiled outputs.
- HTML Help 1.x: The HTML Help 1.x is the CHM compiled help file format that comes pre-installed with Windows.
To download the HTML Help Compiler click https://dl.innovasys.com/current/htmlhelp.exe
- Help 2.x: The Help 2.x is a help format specific to Microsoft Visual Studio 2002-2008. You would only compile to this format if you are creating help materials for integration with Visual Studio 2002-2008. The Help 2.x compiler components are included in the Visual Studio SDK.
Microsoft Help Viewer
Microsoft Help Viewer is the help format used by Visual Studio 2017, 2019, and 2022. You would only compile to this format if you are creating help materials for integration with Visual Studio 2017, 2019, and 2022. It is a zip-based container format and no specific compiler is required. In order to view Microsoft Help Viewer outputs that you build with HelpStudio you need Visual Studio 2017, 2019, or 2022 installed on your computer.
